Boats on Las Negras beach

Boats on Las Negras beach

Here on the Cabo de Gata, despite the good weather, it has been extremely quiet this month. When we stroll down to the village beach in the morning we have usually found a calm sea, blue sky but hardly any people. This photo of the fishing boats was taken last week.

Even when it has been cloudy the sun has tried to break through. This dramatic image was taken from Cala de Salvage, the stony beach in the next cove south of El Playazo.

On El Playazo itself we only saw one person on our last visit. A painter  had set his easel up on the beach to capture the cliffs and sea.

This quiet period is a favorite time for filming here. Behind the beach at El Playazo you can see the production vehicles for the Spanish film, Lejos del Mar, which is being shot around here at the moment. Last week the centre of Las Negras was cut off for a morning while they filmed a scene for the film outside Bar Cerro Negro.

Last year ‘s big movie filmed in Almeria, Exodus, is due to be released next month. At the same time a German film, Der Weg Nach San José, was filmed here and we came across the filming several times. It is now available as a DVD from Amazon. We have ordered a copy.

Here is a new photo of our puppy Daisy. She is now 9 weeks old and has grown a lot since we introduced her on these pages. We do not yet take her out to where there are many other dogs, but she has enough immunity with her vaccinations to be able to go out and enjoy quieter walks.

About Margaret Merry

I grew up in Falmouth, Cornwall, England where, after leaving Falmouth High School, I spent a year at Falmouth School of Art. Then followed three years at Hornsey College of Art in London where I obtained a Diploma in Art and Design. I then spent a post-graduate year at the West of England College of Art in Bristol where I gained an Art Teacher?s Diploma and a Certificate in Education of the University of Bristol. I lived and worked in Truro for over 30 years and became one of Cornwall's most popular artists. My paintings have been exhibited in New York, Tokyo, Paris and London and have been bought by collectors from all over the world. I have published 4 books which became local bestsellers - 'The Natural History of a Westcountry City', 'Margaret Merry's Cornish Garden Sketchbook', 'Sea & Sail' and 'Tidal Reaches'. In 2002 I moved to Spain and now live in the little coastal village of Las Negras in the heart of the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata. I now get my inspiration from the dramatic scenery of Andalucia and its old cities, towns and villages which I usually capture in watercolour. I also enjoy figurative art, particularly nudes and dancers. For these paintings I use artists' soft pastels. I have written and illustrated 3 children's books - The Wise Old Boar, The Lonely Digger and The Adventure of Princess The Pony - which have been published in the USA.

Daisy looks lovely and can’t wait to meet her. I should have thought the influx of no there’s seeking the sun would be arriving/have arrived by now. As the grey days increase and it becomes colder and damper here, I am now down to counting the weeks. Moira x
