Fire is a constant hazard during the long dry Summer in Andalucia when it takes little to set alight the parched vegetation. This mountainside between Las Hortichuelas and Rodalquilar was struck by lightning during a storm in the night of 2nd September and the hill was immediately set ablaze. The Infoca firefighting planes could not fly at night but fortunately the rain put the fire out before it spread too far.
It normally takes 5 years for the flora to totally recover but already this palmetto is sprouting fresh green leaves fanning from its blackened stumps.
Here is a photo of the nearby 16th century Castillo de Rodalquilar close to the beach El Playazo. It was built to protect the villages from pirates..
