Our hopes in striking a good deal regarding the house in Las Hortichuelas described in the previous post were quickly dashed as soon as we started discussing prices with the owners. Their expectations were far too high. The Cabo de Gata is very sought after for holiday rentals in summer and we presume the owners considered they had 3 letting units here. We were getting despondent regarding finding anywhere and had even started considering other areas when on Saturday we received an email from Aty, a Dutch lady living in Las Negras, that she had found a lovely cortijo which might suit us. We drove to Almeria this morning to have a look.
The cortijo, called Casa Totobias (Lark House), is set in 3 hectares of land in the middle of the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata. The little village of Fernan Perez is about 5 minutes drive away, Las Negras, Rodalquilar and beaches about 10 minutes drive away as is the inland market town of Campohermoso. The nearest inhabited property is over 2km away so the property is very isolated but the track to it is good and there are wonderful panoramic views of the near desert landscape.
Casa Totobias has been beautifully restored in the traditional Moorish style of Almeria and has spacious accommodation. Water is from its own well but there is also a clever system to store rainwater and electricity is provided by solar panels. As soon as we saw the property we knew it would suit us and we were able to secure a very satisfactory deal. We will be moving there on about the 1st September. The light was a bit murky today but we hope you like the photos.
Aty and her partner Linda have formed a company providing special interest holidays in the Cabo de Gata mainly to the Durch, Belgium and German markets. see www.flyandenjoy.com. They will soon be adding painting and nature walks, which we hope to set up with them, to their programme. More about this as we progress.
