Walking along the country camino between the hamlet of Realenga de Agicampe and Loja this morning we came across fields blood red with poppies. A colourful subject for a photo. The tower by the farm buildings in the background of the photo above at first puzzled us then we came to the conclusion it used to be a windmill. These fields would have in the past been given over entirely to arable crops like barley hence the windmill would have been used for grinding the corn. Now farmers prefer to plant olives to make life easier or more profitable. Although we like to see olives on the hillsides we would rather see a mixture of crops on the lower, gentler slopes.
