The asparagus harvest is now in full swing and the pickers are out in force this morning even though it is Sunday. The vega around Huétor Tajar is famous for its green asparagus. Yesterday in the Ideal (regional newspaper) there was a full page article about the asparagus of Huétor Tajar. It is famed for its quality and is a unique variety. Three million kilos are harvested here every year. We took this couple in their field on my morning walk today. You can buy the asparagus direct from the farmers in the fields or from the co-operative on the outskirts of Huetor Tajar. I microwave it in an earthenware dish in a little water. One local farmer suggested that I should add a little whisky to the water, I might try that.
