This morning, before it became too hot, we went for a short circular drive through the back lanes to Loja via our nearest village, La Fabrica, to enjoy the spectacular views in the lovely early light.
First we came upon a most interesting old farmyard with a corral full of sheep and goats. By the side of the cobbled yard was an old wooden cart, a wonderful subject for a painting. Numerous dogs greeted us and we asked their owner, the elderly farmer, busy feeding his cats, if we could take some photos.
Further along we had to stop and gaze at the astonishing sight of large field of sunflowers sweeping down the hillside in a swathe of brilliant yellow to merge with the blue haze of the vega below. This was the first field of sunflowers we have seen in the area as the vega is mainly given over to growing vegetables and cereals and most of the hills are covered with olive groves. Yesterday on the vega the workers were out harvesting potatoes.
